Scouting - A Great Option for Military Kids

Published by paroden at 6:27 am under Parenting Edit This

I believe in Scouting.  Not just because it promotes self-reliance, good citizenship and leadership, but also because it connects my kids - the ones who move every two years - with other kids who share the same interests and values.

A civilian friend once asked me why so many military kids were Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  That’s when the lightbulb came on - we’d signed our son up for Cub Scouts because my husband was a Scout, but we stuck with it because it worked on so many levels.  New duty station?  New Scout troop.  Insta-friends.  Friends with parents who got involved, who volunteered, who cared.

My daughter’s experience with Girl Scouting has been similar.  She’s connected easily with Brownies in one state, Juniors in another.  Nearly all of her good friends here are from her Girl Scout troop.

You can find Scout troops all over the world.  If you’re not sure how to get started, look for Boy Scout troops at the BSA’s Local Council Locator page, and for Girl Scout troops at Girl Scouts of the USA’s CouncilFinder page.  Some troops are sponsored by churches, others by community organizations.  You’ll even find troops at overseas military bases.
