Five Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

Published by paroden at 1:28 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

It’s hard to believe that Memorial Day is just around the corner.  I’m still trying to get my garden planted - and it’s still cold and rainy where I live.  Even so, I’m giving some thought to Memorial Day before it actually arrives.  This holiday is about far more than beaches and barbecues.  It’s about our fallen military heroes and about the families who sacrificed so much because their loved one fought for our country.

Here are some suggestions for your Memorial Day weekend.

  •  Visit a national cemetery.  Last year my husband took our children to Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.  We’ve also visited the Florence American Military Cemetery in Italy; my great-uncle is buried there, and we took flowers to leave on his grave for Memorial Day in 2004.  If you don’t live near a national cemetery, visit the gravesite of one of the veterans in your family, and tell your children about his or her service to our country.  Bring a flag to put on the grave.
  • Attend a Memorial Day ceremony - perhaps a wreath-laying - or religious service.  Many communities offer interfaith Memorial Day services.
  • Go to a Memorial Day parade or concert in your community.
  • Visit a local battlefield.  Before you go, check to see if the battlefield’s calendar includes a Memorial Day ceremony.
  • On your way to a nearby beach, park or picnic area, stop at a war memorial and observe a moment of silence.
